Gouache
Many moons ago, I was introduced to gouache when I took a Color Theory class and I’ve been hooked on gouache (and color) ever since. Gouache is opaque watercolor. It is made up of pigment, gum arabic and chalk. It’s the chalk that makes it opaque.
I like the vibrancy, viscosity and flatness of gouache. It lends itself to fine lines and details. Gouache is a quirky paint and people either love it or hate it. I’m definitely a fan! Gouache is the perfect paint to use if you are wanting to showcase color as your main subject matter (which is why it is the paint of choice for my color theory class!).
The flat finish of gouache allows the viewer to really see the interaction of color on color because there is no shine or sheen to detract from the colors themselves. Color and shape and their interactions with each other is what most of my art is all about.
